Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide (galacto-fructose) produced through the isomerization of lactose (galacto-glucose), where a galactose molecule is linked to a fructose molecule. Once ingested, lactulose reaches the colon unchanged, where it is metabolized by intestinal bacteria into short-chain fatty acids, triggering multiple beneficial effects.
